The Toyota HiAce Commuter is a large van or minibus version of the Hiace, manufactured by Toyota Motors. Nothing on the traveler market comes close to it for comfort and reliability. It is nicknamed in Sri Lanka as the 'Rukmani Model'.
The Hiace Commuter was first introduced in 1967 with 1.6 liter version and in 1975 the 1.8 litre 16R engine was added. The second generation was produced with the petrol engine, a 2.2 litre diesel engine was offered.
In 1989, Toyota Hiace shares a body design with the Commuter, which is a 15 seat minibus. In 1999, the Hiace Grandia and 2.0 GL gasoline Hiace variants were launched, as well as the Hiace Commuter, a Hiace meant for business, and the Hiace was facelifted again in that year.
