The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a compact luxury roadster manufactured by Daimler-Benz in 2011. The designation "SLK" derives from the company's design mission to create a roadster that was at once sporty, light and short in German. Daimler-Benz wanted to market a new retractable hardtop system they called the "Vario-Roof", consists of a folding steel hard top divided in half along a transverse axis. The steel roof provides added protection, which is normally found in a coupe, but with the flexibility of a convertible at the same time.
The new generation of SLK-Class is R171 introduced in 2004. The R171 features a number of revisions compared to its predecessor, a 30mm longer wheelbase, increased the length (72mm) and width (65mm), 40% increased use of high strength steel, seven-speed automatic transmission, adaptive two-stage airbags, head/thorax side bags and a revised roof mechanism. Models of SLK R171 include: SLK 200 Kompressor, SLK 300, SLK 350 and SLK 55 AMG.
Development for the new generation SLK (R172) began in 2005, with the final design being selected in 2008. Mercedes-Benz announced the new SLK in 2010. Models of SLK R172 includes: SLK 200, SLK 200 (2.0), SLK 250, SLK 250 CDI, SLK 250d, SLK 300, SLK 350 and SLK 55 AMG.
