The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a mid-size four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria and sold by Mercedes-Benz. The G-wagon is characterized by its boxy styling and body-on-frame construction. The G-class was developed as a military vehicle from a suggestion by the Shah of Iran to Mercedes. Development of G-Class started in 1972, focusing on off-road abilities and maximum safety and comfort.
The 460-series Geländewagen went on sale in 1979. It was offered with two wheelbases, a short wheelbase of 2,400 mm and a long wheelbase of 2,850 mm. There are three body styles: A two-door short wheelbase convertible, a two-door SWB wagon and a long wheelbase four-door wagon, available in G-Class. The 460 was popular with military and off-road enthusiasts, with more than 50,000 built in the first decade.
