The Audi A8 is manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi since 1994. It is a four-door, full-size, luxury sedan. The A8 has been offered with both front- or permanent all-wheel drive—and in short- and long-wheelbase variants, succeeding the Audi V8, and now in its third generation.
The first generation started from 1994 to 2002. The Audi A8 (Typ 4D) was presented in February 1994 and launched at the 1994 Geneva Auto Show in March, with full-scale factory production commencing in June 1994. The A8 featured with all aluminium monocoque, marketed as the "Audi Space Frame" (ASF), which helped to reduce weight and preserve structural rigidity.
The second generation started from 2002 to 2009. The second-generation Audi A8 (Typ 4E) built on the Volkswagen Group D3 platform was introduced via press release in July 2002. The model was longer than the previous generation.
The third generation started from 2010 to present. The third generation of the Audi A8 was launched in Miami on 30 November 2009. The chassis was made on the Volkswagen D4 platform.
