Chevrolet puts young artist’s creation on show in Geneva

The hostesses on the Chevrolet stand at this year’s Geneva Motor Show will be wearing a dress created by Erica Fuschini, a 24-year-old student of the Istituto Carlo Secoli fashion school in Bologna, Italy. Erica won first prize in the Fashion discipline of the 2009 Young Creative Chevrolet applied arts competition, a pan-European initiative to promote the work of young artists.

The brief for the contestants participating in the Fashion category had been to design a very modern and creative tailor-made outfit for Chevrolet’s stand hostesses to be used at international motor shows. The European Young Creative Chevrolet jury chose Erica’s project as the 2009 winner in that discipline because they found that the dress was both elegant and very contemporary. The jury praised the very well executed design, good choice of a natural material and original details.

Erica Fuschini says about her outfit: “I wanted to create an elegant, sexy and practical dress that the hostesses would feel comfortable in. I’m so happy to see that the Chevrolet hostesses are wearing the dress I designed.”

“When I heard about the competition, I thought it was a great opportunity to try something new and the brief encouraged me to think of fashion in a new light. I would encourage anyone with artistic talent to enter. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for young people to have their ideas recognized by a large international company. The competition is tough with a lot of students producing great designs so I was completely shocked when I discovered I had won the European contest! It has boosted my confidence and I really hope it will help me to find a job in fashion in the future,” Erica says about her Young Creative Chevrolet experience.

As a prize, Erica won €1,000 and traveled to Berlin in October 2009 to meet with young German designer Mischa Woeste, founder of the Smeilinener label, to witness her working on the “Spark of Fashion”, a customized version of Chevrolet’s Spark city car. She was also invited to Geneva to see her dress worn on the Chevrolet stand.

“Having Erica’s work displayed in a real-life situation on our stand is a great achievement. This proves how creative, talented and enthusiastic young people can be,” says Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe. “The contest is a great success and I’m impressed with the quality of the winning projects in all the disciplines. Young Creative Chevrolet is an initiative that fits well with what Chevrolet stands for. We intend to make it grow and to find more opportunities of real-life applications for the very interesting ideas coming out of it.”

Advanced technology meets futuristic design

The photo model on the Chevrolet Volt stand in Geneva sports a futuristic outfit that had won first prize on a national level in Hungary in 2009. It was the group work of Szandra Hofstadter (25), Adél Kovács (22) and Anett Hajdú (23), three students of the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts in Budapest, Hungary. While the dress did not make into the European top three for reasons of large-scale production costs, it is a perfect fit for Chevrolet’s advanced-technology extended-range electric vehicle.

Adél Kovács says: “The dress was a great team effort. It was very difficult to come up with the design and to create the outfit. It was good practice for us on how to create something very different. It’s very good news it is being used in Geneva! We are very happy because we didn’t win the competition and this is a good opportunity for us.”

Young Creative Chevrolet 2010

Following up on the success of the 2009 Young Creative Chevrolet competition, with over 530 projects submitted to national contests in 19 European countries, Chevrolet launched the 4th edition of its unique and creative program in late October 2009. Focusing once more on Fashion, Photography, Visual Arts, Video, and Music, students this year are asked to take their inspiration from Chevrolet’s electrifying vehicles, the Chevrolet Spark and the Chevrolet Volt. Registrations for the 2010 Young Creative Chevrolet contest closed on January 31, with another record number of countries and schools participating.
